Known for its car races, Indiana is a major exporter of cars and car parts as well. The home of the Indy 500 has been one of the leaders in the country’s manufacturing revival. Nearly 17% of the state’s non-farm jobs are in manufacturing, the highest percentage of any state. Pharmaceutical giant Eli Lilly’s international headquarters and research facilities are located in Indiana, and pharmaceutical products are the state’s second biggest export behind motor vehicles and auto parts. Manufacturing comprises the largest private industry component of Indiana’s gross domestic product and ranks fifth nationwide.
