In 2017, Pennsylvania’s GDP and personal income were both the sixth highest in the nation. Known historically as the Coal State and the Steel State, Pennsylvania has also been nicknamed the Snack Food Capital of the World. Home to 2,300 food processing companies, including Hershey Foods Corporation and H. J. Heinz, it is the largest producer of canned fruit, chocolate and cocoa products, potato chips, and pretzels. The state’s largest industries are finance, insurance, real estate, rental, and leasing and professional and business services. Mining, quarrying, and oil/gas extraction are also major economic drivers. Pennsylvania is the fifth most populous state in the country.
